Stick in the Mud Conservation is a specialist building conservation firm, based on the Solway.
We undertake conservation of historic buildings throughout Cumbria, Dumfries & Galloway and Scottish Borders, with a passion for the repair of vernacular buildings, including cottages, farmhouses and pele towers.
We have particular expertise in clay dabbin building repair, lime work, and thatching.
The Company is led by Alex Gibbons, who is a Fellow of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).
Alex originally trained as a Surveyor, and has a wealth of experience working on traditional buildings throughout the UK, France, Canada & The USA. He regularly gives talks for The SPAB, and several universities as a visiting lecturer.
We also run courses from our Category A listed clay walled, cruck framed and thatched workshop in Canonbie.
We are able to guide you through the whole process of repairing your old building, from planning & listed building consent to carrying out the work with our network of skilled and committed craftspeople.
We are strong advocates of small scale business and and aim to maintain a high level of quality at a competitive price. We only work direct to clients, and are not VAT registered, which enables us to offer high quality craftsmanship at an affordable price.
